DUNKIRK ‘Wonderful sight,’ effort in city

Dunkirk resident Mary Louise McGraw is not incorrect in her comments regarding the location of the new hero banners that have been placed along the waterfront. During last week’s council meeting, she praised the efforts, calling the placards “gorgeous.”

Then she noted her grievance. “I’m not happy with where those banners were placed,” she said. “I understand … that you were in such earnest to get these banners up this year for this summer, and it’s the first time the program started, and you just wanted to get them done. … You can call me old fashioned; you can call me sentimental; I think these people who gave what they gave should be lined up on Main Street like they are in Arlington, or France, or any other place. I don’t think they should be willy-nilly all over the city.”

McGraw is not alone in her criticism, but it seemed a bit too quick. For all intents and purposes, many across northern Chautauqua County are pleased and impressed with the effort that highlights local veterans and was spearheaded by First Ward Councilwoman Natalie Luczkowiak. To be fair, Add Lumber and a number of private donations also deserve some appreciation for the latest attraction.

“They are truly a wonderful sight,” the councilwoman said following McGraw’s comments. No one can deny that.
