POMFRET One way to build a bigger kingdom

Government wants to become bigger. That is at least the impression one could get from the new law being proposed by the town of Pomfret that would allow a new municipal building in certain mixed-use residential and commercial districts.

A public hearing on the law will be held next month. It’s unlikely that residents will care much.

For its part, Pomfret plans to use federal grant money as well as American Rescue Plan Act funding to pay for the site that is selected. “We’re still looking at a town hall where there might be more space,” Supervisor Dan Pacos said. “Building costs are just too high right now, so we are trying to find a building that would be more economical for us to move into.”

In recent months, Pomfret was attempting to look fiscally responsible while haggling with Fredonia over water funds. Now, it wants a larger building while population decreases.

It appears that penny-pinching, however, is just for show.
