Handling short-term rentals has become a long-term problem -- and patience appears to be wearing thin. In the town of Dunkirk, meetings have been dominated by the subject. It is not much different in the village of Cassadaga.
Before making his statements to the Town Board, Gary Hazelton noted the debate has taken too much time. "We started this two years ago and now I've got to wear glasses," he said.
This is a dicey predicament for representatives of the Town Board. Because lifelong Chautauqua County residents love layers of government -- 60 total entities altogether -- it prevents quick action, which is exactly what is happening in this case.
Town Board members in this instance are required to make a tough decision. Do they side with the residents? Or do they back those who are renting properties near the lake that keep creating a stir?
Respected town Supervisor Juan Pagan said a decision will be coming soon. "Let me just say, the town is working diligently to resolve this issue. We're all still working on it. Bear with us, please."
That could happen as early as later this month. Rest assured that whatever decision is made, there will be a segment who is unhappy.
