ROUTE 60 Necessary work has safety as goal

Motorists who use Route 60 from the Fredonia roundabout to Airport Hill in the town of Ellicott are facing a bit more stop-and-go traffic in recent weeks. Two projects to improve the stretch — and make it safer — have forced the two-lane road to be reduced to one.

To the north in Pomfret, the work will establish a center, two-way, left-turn lane on that stretch of Route 60. Roadside work includes moving existing drainage ditches and pipes to accommodate the widening of the road. That has been in progress since early April and is expected to be completed by Dec. 1. Through that portion, lower speed limits are posted. Culvert work near Route 83 also recently began, which has led to one lane.

South of the Gerry four corners is another project that has reduced traffic to one lane near a bridge.

While the work is an inconvenience, there is no questioning the importance of the north-south connection. Previous improvements over the last 20 years have helped with traffic flow and safety.

That must continue to be the priority for the state.
