Fredonia Volunteer efforts rise above bickering

Some of the best of our region often comes through the volunteer efforts — not government leadership. That is why it is so refreshing to see another organization attempt to put a better face on the village than the elected leaders do.

Last week, an article in the OBSERVER highlighted Embrace Fredonia. The new non-profit group is dedicated to beautifying downtown and had its first brainstorming session last month. The group is working with a local greenhouse, using donated supplies and materials, to plant flowers Sunday on Main and Water streets, in Barker Common and near Village Hall.

“The mission of Embrace is to really address those wants and needs,” said Lauren Boyle, Embrace Fredonia president. “We want to partner with business, we want to partner with community members and show them that we truly want to Embrace Fredonia.”

As too many have noted, Village Board meetings become quite contentious and unwelcoming. Those who hold office often add to that, which turns into unflattering — and sometimes childish — debate.

It is not a good look. Dedicated volunteers, such as Embrace Fredonia, have a better chance at allowing the community to succeed. Its mission does not involve petty politics. It is, instead, about getting things done.
