Fredonia school board member Tom Hawk is absolutely correct. When it comes to Fredonia sports, the playing field is not level.
Not even close.
Most of Fredoniaás fields ä at the Orange Bowl and its facilities behind the main campus ä are outdated and cannot compare to newer facilities built at other districts. âItás been a big concern from the community, itás been a big concern from the coaches, with some questions asked by the board as far as safety with our facilities and our athletic fields,ã Hawk said. âWeáve got a report here thatás showing some unsafe and unusable equipment. Who deems the fields safe?ã
Since Jesse Beers, softball coach, came forward to discuss the issue during the spring, momentum has picked up. But making progress on old facilities is not something that will happen quickly.
For its part, the board is working with a consultant to find out what steps to take. But even getting that report does not make bring urgency to the issue.
Fredonia is one of the top four largest districts in the county in terms of enrollment. When it comes to athletics, its outdoor facilities could be right near the bottom.
Residents ä and board members ä have every right to cheer on some changes for the future.
