ENDORSEMENT Our choices in county races

2 min read

There are three newcomers involved in two area races for Chautauqua County Legislature while one incumbent seeks re-election. In District 4, 5, 6, 7 and 18, incumbent candidates are running unopposed.

• DISTRICT THREE - Nevin Eklund is right to point out an oversized surplus of $37 million that Chautauqua County is holding on to for a rainy day. He's also spot on when it comes to current Republican lawmakers adding to the hiring rolls. Unfortunately, his opponent Bob Scudder is beloved by his constituency in Pomfret and Fredonia. Each election, Scudder has cruised to victory despite too often toeing the line with his Republican colleagues. Where he and Eklund differ comes down to air service. Scudder has rightfully voiced opposition to continuing to throw money at the two airports. Eklund wants more service there. We're not sure that's happening and we back Scudder.

• DISTRICT 19 - Braiden McElhaney is young and energetic about his opportunity to serve the Westfield-Ripley region. If he is elected, we are certain he will be a vocal individual on just about every significant issue that comes before the Legislature. His challenger, Frederick S. Johnson, is more laid back when it comes to the campaign. As a successful owner of Johnson Estates Winery, Johnson is in tune to the economic dynamics and needs of the district. Though both will make excellent candidates if elected, we offer no endorsement in this race.
