HIGH WINDS Responders at best in rough weather

Scanner chatter in the north county did not quiet for hours once 70 mph gusts rolled into the area. Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., responders were called for the regular emergency calls to major hazards that included trees on houses, overturned tractor trailers and power outages.

In a call with area media on Tuesday afternoon, Noel Guttman — county Emergency Services Director — discussed the dire situation facing many volunteers and paid departments along the lake shore. “The storm has had a very significant impact for our northern border, in particular from Ripley to the Silver Creek area. Fire Departments and municipal EMTs have been out dealing with a lot of trees down and wires down, associated with that,” he said. “Our power company partners from NYSEG, National Grid and local municipalities have been very busy. Unfortunately, calls are backing up quite a bit.”

During the worst of the storms, you could hear the concern on the scanner for the need for assistance. It all happened so fast — and around the same time.

Needless to say, every call was answered — some later than others depending on the priority. Tuesday late morning to Wednesday early evening, the weather was at its worst. Our first responders, as usual, were at their best.
