BROCTON Big-buck schools won’t fix playground

As warmer temperatures graced the region earlier this week, thoughts of spring cannot help but enter in the minds of many. It certainly was what Brocton Village Board members were thinking about when it came to one of the playgrounds.

A windstorm in January continues to leave its mark on Ryckman Park that was damaged in a storm earlier this winter. Village Clerk Scott Jagoda noted nearly $45,000 of damage was caused, while the village’s insurance policy only covers approximately $21,000 of the damage.

He was not given a timeline on installation of the new equipment. “Spring is just around the corner. We want to try to get that rolling and get everything put back up,” he said.

In the meantime, Jagoda recently submitted a grant application to the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation seeking funding to replace the Ryckman Park equipment. While that is an option, that Foundation has a history of supporting collaborative efforts. In this case, the village would be grateful for any other support.

Of course, Brocton schools is in the midst of major upgrades to its facilities — more than $16 million. It’s too bad that chunk of change does little to benefit the overall village.
