BUFFALO SABRES Lots to lose when wearing the blues
Before the 2007 season, the Buffalo Sabres wore a black and red uniform combination that made a bit of a comeback last year. Throughout those years, the wardrobe that was accompanied by what many considered a goathead, was often despised by those who liked the traditional look of the royal blue and gold.
But the black and red was a winning combination for the decade it was worn. Plenty of playoff appearances, including a Stanley Cup final. Since the change to the shades of blue, the results have been dismal. Since 2011, there has not been a playoff appearance — the longest drought in the National Hockey League.
Even today, the black jersey often brings a better outcome, at least 15 victories in more than 20 games. Monday’s attire, against lowly Anaheim, brought a typical blue and gold result — a 4-3 loss.
We’re not saying the lack of a playoff appearance over the last 12 years is due to what they’re wearing. But the outcomes in the jerseys show a trend. When it’s not the black home throwbacks, the results often have fans feeling blue.
