DUNKIRK Amphitheater fits in portion of park

Since the $10 million Downtown Reinvestment Initiative plans were released by the city of Dunkirk more than a year ago, there has been some rumblings about one of the proposals. This week, for the first time publicly, the criticism came to light: some veterans are opposed to the amphitheater in Memorial Park.

Included in the Common Council’s work packet this week, was a communication from the John W. Dill Post 434 American Legion. Signed by post Commander Mattie McIntyre and Adjutant Stanley Kawski, the letter states, “To infringe on this area would be disrespectful to those who selflessly gave their lives to protect our country and its freedom.”

We understand the dedication of all veterans and legion members. Our country’s freedom depends on it.

However, the location where the amphitheater is targeted is away from the important monuments that pay tribute to those who served as well as first responders. In addition, the city consistently uses the proposed space for the facility in the park — during previous summers — for concerts already.

While legion members have a right to voice their concerns, we believe the city’s plans do not infringe on the section of the location dedicated to the memory of our heroes.

Starting at $4.00/week.
