HOMELESSNESS: Panel talk brings insight on topic

An important topic will be in the spotlight next week. The League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County will present a panel discussion entitled “An Overview of Homelessness in Chautauqua County” in partnership with the American Democracy Project of SUNY Fredonia on Thursday, March 28 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in Room S204-DE, Williams Center, SUNY Fredonia.

According to a news release, this event will shed some light on the realities of homelessness, which exists all around us and allow for a sharing of ideas on how to help our neighbors who are affected. The number of homeless and those at risk was reported to be around 1,500 in Chautauqua County in 2022, with $1.36 million spent on temporary housing.

Speaking at the event will be Amanda Straight, deputy director of Housing and Community Development at Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc., and Carmelo Hernandez, director of Community Mental Hygiene Services for Chautauqua County.

As many have seen throughout a number of area communities, homelessness is no longer hidden. It’s right in front of our eyes.

This discussion may not help provide a road map for community solutions. But it will definitely help in the understanding.
