DUNKIRK: Tough choices include festivals
Dunkirk this week announced a full slate of events as part of its traditional Music on the Pier and summer festivals. Though it’s a welcome sign that warmer weather is on the way, it also brings a bit of a pause.
City officials are navigating their way through a multi-million dollar deficit, which they only learned about one month ago. As desperate as the situation is, Dunkirk and Common Council may have to take a look at these events, including the Fourth of July fireworks, to see if they are truly viable in the future.
In a $26 million budget, the revenues and expenses cover the municipal staffs, departments and other items. We’re unsure of the total price tag of the summer happenings, but we do remember those events were running a six-figure deficit 10 years ago.
Moving forward, how will the city pay for the entertainment while digging itself out a deep fiscal hole? It’s been a vital part of drawing tourists and residents to waterfront for nearly 20 years.
But is it something we can afford in 2025?
