DUNKIRK: City’s tree effort keeps on growing

Who says there’s no green in Dunkirk? Though the money troubles in City Hall are garnering a lot of attention in recent months, a tree-growing campaign continues to branch out.

Two groups, Revitalize Dunkirk and A Tree for Thee effort, have been busy replacing those that were damaged and destroyed by the emerald ash borer. Mary Louise McGraw is helping oversee one of the plantings.

She said A Tree For Thee paid for the project by selling individual trees and commemorative plaques to go with them. McGraw said, “210 applications were sent in for trees and plaques. The response was three times more than we expected.”

We all know the treasure Point Gratiot can be. Picturesque sunsets and beautiful views of Lake Erie.

Adding some shade, in the form of new trees, will help the atmosphere at the park. For now, it’s time to get growing.
