DUNKIRK Having comforts during graduation

It appears the Dunkirk High School graduating Class of 2024 may not be celebrating at the football field. During a recent school board meeting the previous location for the ceremony — State University of New York at Fredonia — was being considered.

DHS held its ceremonies at SUNY prior to the pandemic’s onset in 2020. The graduations were moved to the football field at the high school, at first to enable “social distancing.” Subsequent senior classes simply preferred the site over SUNY Fredonia.

Secondary School Principal Adam Hernandez said recently the senior class seeks a return to SUNY Fredonia. Hernandez said class advisers are all advocates of moving it back to SUNY Fredonia. However, he acknowledged, “If this decision is made, we will definitely hear from the ones who don’t want to leave the field.”

In discussing the issue, it’s clear the uncertainties of being outdoors are a distraction for families and the graduates. There’s always uncertainty with the weather and a dog made its way on the field at last year’s event.

Tradition is important. Memorable ceremonies are as well. SUNY Fredonia has a first-class facility. And, the weather for the event will not be a problem.
