FREDONIA Time for questions on project is now

Residents in the Fredonia Central School have time to ask questions and offer opinions before a December vote that could change the look of the district, its music program and athletic fields.

As documented last week by OBSERVER reporter Braden Carmen, the district is considering taking on a three-stage project that is “probably the highest that I have ever seen in my years of doing this. That is definitely a big ask.” That comment came from Alyssa Catlin, associate of Young and Wright, the architectural firm that is helping the district.

As of last week, the district is planning to move forward with three propositions regarding capital improvements to the District at a vote in December. The propositions are centered around basic needs for the District’s buildings, enhanced music education and performance spaces, and athletic facilities upgrades. Those three propositions will total more than $50 million of work, which would result in a tax levy increase of nearly 10% each year for the next 15 years.

Athletic fields appear to be one of the most contentious issues in the district in recent years. According to plans, a multi-purpose complex will be usable for baseball, softball, football and soccer games, with baseball and softball fields separated enough to allow for games to be held simultaneously. The complex would also feature a sound system. Parking will be available for 150 vehicles and approximately 1,000 attendees can be accommodated at any given time.

The other notable development along the lines of athletic facilities is that the District will be moving away from the Orange Bowl once an alternative is established. Young and Wright representatives estimate decommissioning costs of the Orange Bowl to be $250,000.

Another school board meeting is Tuesday, July 16. Voters are likely to have more questions — especially when it comes to the cost and community burden. A chart outlining what the price will be to residents — based on property value — if the project is approved also needs to be addressed.

Starting at $3.50/week.
