WESTFIELD SCHOOL: Numbers back post elimination

Westfield Academy & Central School’s decision to eliminate a teaching position was not a popular move in the spring with some. But it was responsible.

Last month, two second-grade teachers attended a board meeting in an effort to get the district to reconsider not replacing the position held by Samantha Eklund. She resigned her position as of June.

In order to keep taxes down, the board decided it would be better to not fill the position — rather than add it back. Superintendent Michael Cipolla indicates the numbers correspond with the choice.

“As of today, the two sections of second grade will have 17-18 students with one section having a special education teacher supporting reading, math, and academic intervention services in the classroom,” he said.

Inflation is a key driver for many government and educational entities. As costs increase, those are often passed on to the constituency. That’s a double whammy. These individuals are already being dinged with higher prices at the gas station and grocery store.

While we understand the argument by the teaching staff to bring back the position, the board is correct in its selection. It all comes down to the numbers of students.

Right now, as enrollment continues to decline countywide, the demand for more positions is just not there.

Starting at $3.50/week.
