Thruway: Welcome repairs come at high cost

Last week, the New York State Thruway Authority announced it would be resuming work on a $45 million pavement revitalization project from the Fredonia to Westfield exits. That’s a large chunk of change for about 40 miles of road in both directions.

“The Thruway is putting toll dollars to work, reinvesting toll revenue into rebuilding and modernizing the Thruway system,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank G. Hoare, Esq. said. “We are committed to enhancing safety and reliability with these infrastructure investment projects, while providing some of the lowest toll rates in the nation.”

No one can deny the convenience of Interstate 90, but let’s be a bit more realistic. There is no reason to give a glowing review for the tolls.

For instance, once you reach the Pennsylvania state line, there is no fee for Interstate 90. Same with Ohio.

Tolls, which have increased within the last two years, may help with construction but it allows for a $1.36 billion authority to keep raking in the dough. That is one more fee on already overtaxed residents and businesses in New York state.

Starting at $3.50/week.
