SUNY FREDONIA: Getting a grip on fiscal picture
It appears as if the State University of New York at Fredonia has found the right person to right the financial ship. During the recent College Council meeting this month, Wayne Lynch spoke frankly about a troubling deficit that is being whittled down.
“Current expenses are not reflective of current enrollment,” said Lynch, vice president for finance and administration. “Expenses are probably more aligned with about 1,000 more students, give or take. We have to right-size the expenses to the revenue line, there should be no mistake about that. If not, we will lose faith from those in front of us, and much more draconian measures will be put in here.”
Nothing sugar-coated in that statement, which is a welcome change from what we have heard from municipal governments or local school districts. Those entities can never find significant areas for cuts and then pass on higher expenses to residents in the form of taxes.
It is not as simple for those in higher education, which gets pricier by the day.
Enrollment at the university is consistently around 3,000 in recent years. That is no longer a shocking fact, but a reality.
Leadership is needed to rein in spending. Lynch, at the start, is not mincing words.
