DUNKIRK: Trucks prove fiscal ride still bumpy

Dunkirk’s incompetence was on full display again at this week’s Finance Committee meeting. This time it involved the purchase of two fire trucks two years ago.

Once the decision was made to purchase the vehicles for about $1.75 million, the plan for financing was never seen through in 2023. As usual, this lack of attention to detail does not involve the current administration of Mayor Kate Wdowiasz, but it definitely has the finger-prints of current council members James Stoyle and Nancy Nichols on it.

Those in attendance at the meeting were told the trucks are already in production and are due off the line in August. Once inspections are complete, shipment and delivery arrangements should take about four to six weeks.

“That was an incurred deficit we all agreed on 100%, 1,000%,” Stoyle said at the meeting. “So we’re gonna pay for them.”

But how?

Remember, it was Stoyle and Nichols who came out last week in a letter to New York state noting they were against a $13.7 million loan for the city that was approved by both the Senate and Assembly. Both have admitted they are far from financial wizards, but they never miss a chance to spend funds — especially those the city does not have.

This is one more case of council managing in the dark when it comes to expenses. Stoyle wants those new fire trucks but has offered no plan whatsoever on how to pay for them.

Is it any wonder there are so many doubts surrounding the city’s fiscal future?

Starting at $3.50/week.
