DUNKIRK: Session is chance for nuclear insight

Dunkirk residents who are seeking more information — or want to be a part of the discussion regarding a possible nuclear plant — are invited to attend a session that follows tonight’s council meeting.

City Mayor Kate Wdowiasz has invited Dr. Andrew Whittaker, PhD, PE, SE, a SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, from the University at Buffalo to present an informational discussion entitled, “WNY and all things nuclear,” followed by a question and answer opportunity for the public.

“We’re eager to begin this important conversation about the future of our city,” Wdowiasz said. “Repurposing the NRG site with next-generation nuclear technology has the potential to transform our local economy and secure long-term energy stability. This is just the beginning of an open and inclusive dialogue, and we welcome every voice at the table as we explore what’s possible for Dunkirk and the region.”

Dunkirk is being eyed as one possible location for a nuclear plant after state Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a plan to build a new site in upstate. Dunkirk, which was home to a coal-burning plant for nearly 70 years, has faced financial difficulty in the last decade due to the shuttering of the site and poor decisions by elected officials.

While there is momentum behind the idea, not everyone is in favor of the proposal — especially here. This forum is one avenue to learn more — and offer some input.

It will occur sometime around 6 p.m. today.

Starting at $3.50/week.
