HEALING: Event tonight is time for prayers

Sunday afternoon, another “evil act of violence” was carried out in Michigan when a gunman attacked a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel and set the building ablaze, killing four people. Only hours earlier — on Saturday — a man in a boat opened fire on a crowd in Southport, N.C., killing three and injuring five.

These incidents spotlight why an event tonight is so important for so many in our communities.

In the wake of recent violence — both domestic and global — the Northern Chautauqua residents are being called together to unite in prayer, and be an example of hope. United in Peace, an ecumenical candlelight prayer service, will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1030 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

The service will begin at the pavilion behind the church with Scripture readings and reflections led by Rev. Robert J. Owczarczak, pastor of The Lord’s Vineyard family of Catholic parishes, and Pastor Matthew Schettler of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

“This is a time for us to come together – people of all faith traditions — and ask God to bring peace and healing to our neighborhoods, our nation, and the world,” organizers said. “We hold in prayer those affected by violence in our streets as well as those suffering from war.”

Candles will be provided, and participants are welcome to bring their own “Pray for Peace” signs, or make their own with materials provided at the event. Because the event is outdoors, those who have difficulty standing are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Starting at $3.50/week.
