SCHOOLS: CVCS quickly kept everyone safe

In the must-know immediately high-tech world, some individuals can become upset and disappointed by not having notice of significant procedures taking place in their neighborhood or local school. That is exactly what transpired Monday at Cassadaga Valley Central School.

To their credit, the district reacted immediately when told of a shooting incident that took place that morning in the village of Sinclairville. For more than two hours, the school was placed in a “lockout” situation. It is a standard safety protocol designed to protect students and staff when there is a potential danger in the surrounding community, but not within the school itself.

Its purpose is to keep the inside of the school secure and calm while giving law enforcement time and space to address the situation in the community. “The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We are grateful for the swift response of local law enforcement, our School Safety Advisor, and our school teams, as well as the patience and cooperation of families during today’s precautionary measure,” the district reported on its Facebook page.

During a lockout, all exterior doors and windows are secured; no one is allowed to enter or exit the building; students and staff may continue with normal activities inside the building.

We understand that in matters that could be real-time emergencies, things do fall through the cracks — such as all parents being contacted at the time of the disruption. But from all accounts, the most important result happened for the district. A plan was put into place — and everyone was out of harm’s way.

Excellent job by all.
