OLYMPICS: Added results to hockey wins
It was not the miracle many of us witnessed in 1980 when the United States men’s hockey team knocked off the Soviet Union in stunning fashion before winning gold at Lake Placid during the Olympics. But there was no doubting the magic.
Backed by a superb performance by goalie Connor Hallebuyck, the U.S. team defeated Canada, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday morning. It was an event that captivated both countries, which held watch parties across their respective nations during the early hours.
“This is all about our country right now,” said Jack Hughes, who lost at least one and maybe two of his front teeth taking a high stick during the game. “I love the U.S.A. I love my teammates. It’s unbelievable. The USA Hockey brotherhood is so strong.”
In addition to the men’s team, the women’s hockey team dominated as well in Italy. In the final, it had to comeback to beat the spunky Canadians in a dramatic contest.
What’s best to remember about these games is the togetherness. Despite the political differences that are so apparent at the moment, these teams brought us all together.
That’s a huge victory.
