A visit to the Brooks-TLC web site offers some history regarding the hospital's name. It notes, "Horatio G. and Julia A. Brooks never wanted their names on a building. In fact, they were both deceased when that moment came to pass and Brooks Memorial Hospital was created.
"It was their two children that saw an opportunity to model honor for us," the website says. "They saw it first-hand in the way their father and mother cared for their staff at the Brooks Locomotive Co. for so many years. They were deeply involved and attached to the health, safety and continued well-being of their employees. So in humble adoration for and honor of their parents, they donated the former family Mansion on the corner of Central Avenue and Sixth Street to be used to care for their entire community's health.
"And Brooks Memorial Hospital was born."
Since the closing of the former Lakeshore Hospital in Irving, the institution has taken on the Brooks-TLC name. But often, the city location is just known as Brooks.
A major - and positive -- change is occurring in the north county with the building of a new hospital in Fredonia on East Main Street. The impressive work includes steel beams and a paved road to the future site.
But what will the name be in the future? On the signs leading to the construction site it simply says "Chautauqua County's new hospital."
At the moment, those who responded to the online observertoday.com poll, "Should the new hospital being built in Fredonia keep “Brooks” as part of its name?" are hopeful the Brooks name remains. About 65% said yes while 35% disagreed.
