Best foot forward to help needy

1 min read

One of the most highly requested items by people in need and the homeless are foot attire, specifically socks. Once again, SOCKTOBER -- a month-long sock drive that collects warm new socks for distribution to individuals and families is underway.

The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, in collaboration with Cattaraugus County Bank in Dunkirk and Lake Shore Savings Bank in Dunkirk, Fredonia, and Westfield branches, will accept sock donations. In addition, other drop-off locations, including individual classrooms, clubs, businesses, and congregations, continue to participate in sock collections throughout the county.

As we have noted before, need is great here at home as costs continue to rise. In Chautauqua County, the poverty rate is near 17% and at 26% in Dunkirk and 24% in the village of Fredonia.

Donations help thousands receive the socks, the NCCF notes, with agencies such as Chautauqua County Rural Ministry, the Homeless Coalition, Meals on Wheels, Jamestown YWCA, Boys and Girls Club, St. Gianna Molla, Mental Health Association, St. Susan’s Center and others as part of the distribution.
