October awareness campaign worth attention

2 min read

Throughout this month, there are a number of events and initiatives to bring awareness to the fight against breast cancer. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women will be diagnosed with the illness during their lifetime.

That number is far too high.

It is why the National Football League continues to annually team with the American Cancer Society. Crucial Catch helps more people catch cancer early, and addresses the unequal burden of cancer in under-resourced communities.Since 2009, Crucial Catch has raised more than $38 million reaching  over 2.7 million people with interventions to increase cancer screenings and improve outcomes through CHANGE grants, given to health centers in all NFL team markets to expand access to cancer screenings and preventive treatments.

On a local level today, the Hillbillies will host its annual “Pink Out Block Out” volleyball game against Jamestown at Fredonia High School. Proceeds benefiting Roswell Park Cancer Center. The event begins at 5 p.m., with a junior varsity game preceding the varsity contest.

During the last week, the team received some assistance when the Sons of the American Legion Post 59 recently presented a donation to the Fredonia Volleyball team to help support the Pink Out Block Out event.
