Wednesday Travel League

The league played its U.S. Open through steady rain on June 26 at Beechwood Golf Course in Fairview, PA. Bob Thompson successfully defended his U.S. Open crown from last year, posting the low round of 83. Tom Destro and Ed Tofil were runners-up with 85. Thompson led the front nine with 40 and Tofil led the back nine with 41. Butch Mackowiak and Tim Walawender won the B and C Flights, respectively. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was John Tofil.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Thompson (Nos. 1, 2), Robert Calph (No. 6), Ed Tofil (No. 11), Mike Wolfe (No. 13) and Tom Destro (No. 17); B Flight — Lenny Leszkowicz (No. 1), Jim Szalkowski (Nos. 3, 12), Pat Weaver (No. 6), John Waterman (Nos. 7, 10), Danny Kubera (No. 11), Dave Franklin (No. 15) and Tony Destro (No. 17); C Flight — Dave Momberger (Nos. 3, 9), Mike Wiolloughby (Nos. 7, 18) and Walawender (No. 14).

Closest to the pin were Calph (No. 2), Gary Haase (No. 4), Joe Michalski (No. 10) and Franklin (No. 15). Winners of the Par-3 Contest were: A Flight — Thompson (+1), B Flight — Waterman (+2) and C Flight — Mick Dunning Sr. (+3). Top point winners were Thompson (50), Franklin (45), and Calph and Waterman (30 each). Season points leaders: Wolfe (236), Walawender (162), Ed Tofil (143), Thompson (140), Dave Mathews (108), Weaver (104), Dave Miller (102), John Bongiovanni (99), Calph (93), Haase(91). Milestone hit this week: Lenny Leszkowicz went over 1,000 career points.

With the Independence Day holiday falling on a Wednesday this year, the league took the week off. On July 11th, the league will be playing Mound Grove Golf Course in Waterford, PA. The first group tees off at 9:30. To inquire about openings, call or text John at 785-2291.

Final Gary Tripp golf tourney planned

The Tenth and Final Gary Tripp Memorial Golf Tournament (GTMGT) plans are progressing and on the First Tee. The 2018 tournament is set for Saturday, August 25 at the Vineyards golf courses in Fredonia. Registration starts at 9 a.m. The shotgun start is at 10 a.m.

The registration fee of $65 per golfer includes food on the course and dinner at the Kosciuszko Club and a golfer’s gift. Captains’ foursome forms are being sent out the week of July 2.

The deadline to sign up is Monday, Aug. 6. Contact Katie or Pat at 366-1044. Extra foursome forms and sponsor forms will be available at the K Club.

Monies raised from past tournaments have been used to establish an annual Gary Tripp Colorectal Cancer Research fund at Roswell Park, an annual GTMGT Dunkirk High School Scholarship and an annual donation to the GTMGT SUNY Fredonia Scholarship.

Area youth football camp scheduled for July 29

Gateway Park in the Village of Gowanda will host a youth football camp on Sunday, July 29 from noon to 4 p.m. Athletes ages 7 through 13 are invited to attend. There is no residency requirement. Each participant will receive offensive skill instruction followed by lunch, a chalk talk and touch football tournament. Each participant will also receive a camp gift during the award’s ceremony. There is no cost to attend thanks to a donation made by the Gowanda American Legion Post #409. However, the camp is only accepting the first 35 athletes that preregister.
