Wednesday Travel League

For the first time in league history, there was a 5-way tie (at 78) for first place. In the league’s third major event of the season, the Pennsylvania Open, held at North Hills in Corry, PA, the overall winner with a birdie on the first handicap hole (No.9) was Tim Walawender. Also shooting 78 were Robert Calph, Ed Tofil, Al Etzel and Dave Mathews. It was Walawender’s second career tour victory. His first tour victory, coincidentally, was the 2015 Pennsylvania Open. The low front nine was carded by Mathews with a 1-over par 36. The low back nine of 40 was shot by Walawender, Calph and Etzel. Other flight winners were Mike Willoughby (B), Mick Dunning Sr. (C) and John Waterman (D). The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jim Ellman Sr.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Walawender (Nos. 7, 9), Wayne Ormsby (No. 10) and Mathews (No. 16); B Flight — Mike Wolfe (Nos. 2, 4, 5), Bill Aldrich (No. 10), Dave Wallace (Nos. 11, 13) and Jeff Marsowicz (No.12); C Flight — Don Kujawa (No. 5), Frank Benamati (No. 8), John Tofil (No. 9), Jim Szalkowski (Nos. 10, 12, 13), Dunning (No. 14), Pat Weaver (No. 16) and Danny Kubera (No. 17); D Flight — Jack Hood (Nos. 4, 5), Ellman (No. 8), Waterman (Nos. 9, 11) and Dave Momberger (Nos. 13, 15).

Closest to the pin were Mathews (No. 4), Walawender (Nos. 7, 15) and Ed Tofil (No. 11). Winners of the Par-3 Contest were: A: Ed Tofil(Even), B: Wallace(+3), C: Weaver(+1), D: Angelo Leone(+5). Top point winners were Walawender (76) and Mathews, Wolfe and Szalkowski(28 each). Season points leaders: Wolfe (279), Walawender (238), Ed Tofil (167), Weaver (156), Bob Thompson (140), Mathews and Willoughby (136 each), Etzel (135), Kujawa (121), Szalkowski (110).

Inferno Fastpitch tryouts planned in August

New York Inferno Fastpitch tryouts will be held at Garnet Park, 66 Garnet Road, Amherst. In case of rain on any of the following days, tryouts will be held at New Era Park, 3950 Broadway, Depew.

The tryout schedule is as follows:

— Monday, Aug. 6 at 5:30 p.m.: 14U (DOB 2004-2005); and 16U (DOB 2002-2003).

— Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 5:30 p.m.: 10U (DOB 2008-2009); 12U (DOB 2006-2007); and 18U (DOB 2000-2001).

— Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m.: 14U (DOB 2004-2005); and 16U (DOB 2002-2003).

— Thursday, Aug. 9 at 5:30 p.m.: 10U (DOB 2008-2009); 12U (DOB 2006-2007); and 18U (DOB 2000-2001).

— Friday, Aug. 10 at 5:30 p.m.: 14U (DOB 2004-2005); and 16U (DOB 2002-2003).

— Saturday, Aug. 11 at 8:30 a.m.: 10U (DOB 2008-2009) and 12U (DOB 2006-2007); 10 a.m.: 14U (DOB 2004-2005); noon: 16U (DOB 2002-2003) and 18U (DOB 2000-2001).

— Sunday, Aug. 12 at 8:30 a.m.: 10U (DOB 2008-2009) and 12U (DOB 2006-2007); 10 a.m.: 14U (DOB 2004-2005); noon: 16U (DOB 2002-2003) and 18U (DOB 2000-2001).

Final Gary Tripp golf tourney set for Aug. 25

The Tenth and Final Gary Tripp Memorial Golf Tournament (GTMGT) plans are progressing and on the First Tee. The 2018 tournament is set for Aug. 25 at the Vineyards golf courses in Fredonia. Registration starts at 9 a.m. The shotgun start is at 10 a.m.

The registration fee of $65 per golfer includes food on the course and dinner at the Kosciuszko Club and a golfer’s gift. The deadline to sign up is Aug. 6. Contact Katie or Pat at 366-1044. Extra foursome forms and sponsor forms will be available at the K Club.

Monies raised from past tournaments have been used to establish an annual Gary Tripp Colorectal Cancer Research fund at Roswell Park, an annual GTMGT Dunkirk High School Scholarship and an annual donation to the GTMGT SUNY Fredonia Scholarship.

Team New Era to hold tryouts for 2019 squad
