Senior League baseball playoffs

Pro-Bats Yankees 6, L’il Magill’s Giants 1

Despite being outhit 6-4, the Yanks (11-5) played long ball to upend the Giants and move onto the semifinal round of the CMSBL playoffs. The Yanks scored first on a Joe Pantano walk, stolen base, throwing error and sac fly by Justyn Vara. The Giants answered on a bunt single by Nick Raynor, a walk and throwing error, as Raynor stole third base. A lead off double by Brent Carmello (two runs) in the fourth inning followed by two deep fly balls, accounted for the Yanks taking a 2-1 into the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back (and belly-to-belly) home runs by Pantano (two runs, three RBI) and Joe Polichetti (two RBI) broke open the pitcher’s duel and closed out the scoring. Vara pitched his fourth complete game of the season, allowing six hits, while walking two and striking out nine. The Giants got hits from Alberto Benejan, Jason Tomkiewicz, Josh Strzelac, Raynor, Jordan Bennick and John Fanale. A gutty Bennick went the distance in the loss, allowing only four hits and walking five.

In semifinal action Sunday, the Yanks will host the Stericycle Athletics at 10 a.m. at the Dunkirk Lucas Ave. field. The A’s (7-8) disposed of the Sunset Bay Inn and Beach Club Braves 11-4, while the Whiskey Hill Saloon Marlins (7-9) upset the Kosciusko Club Phillies 4-1, and travel to the face the top seeded Gowanda Phoenix Lodge Cubs (13-2) at Gowanda High School, also at 10 a.m.

Stericycle A’s 11, Sunset Bay Braves 4

Brian Gunnell picked up the win in relief of Austin Spicer with five solid innings of three-hit ball, while striking out eight Braves. Gunnell, Brian Wojocinski, Shane Nusom and Randy Stuart all had two hits each to lead the Swinging A’s 15-hit offense. Cody Wicks took the tough loss on the hill, while collecting three hits and two runs batted in at the plate.
