PRO-BATS YANKEES 5,

GOWANDA PHOENIX LODGE #262 CUBS 2

The Pro-Bats Yankees picked a great time to end their hitting slump, banging out 12 hits, scoring two runs in the both the fifth and sixth innings, then hung on to capture the 2018 CMSBL championship over the Cubs. Both teams scored a run in the first, but the Yankees Justyn Vara pitched shut-out ball until the eighth, before giving up another run. With the Yanks leading 5-2 to start the bottom of the ninth, the Cubs started a rally, with the first two batters reaching on base hits. The Yanks turned to Joe Pantano to get the last three outs via a fly ball, strikeout and ground out, to end the game. The pair allowed seven hits, struck out seven and walked four Cubs batters. The Bombers got key contributions at the plate from Dennis Gawronski (2 hits, 2 RBI), Stony Woodard (2 hits, RBI, run), Matt Eaker (2 hits, run), Pantano (2 hits, walk, 2 runs) and Vara (2 hits, run). For the Cubbies, John Green (run) and Jamie Wallschlager both had a pair of hits. Wallschlager was a horse on the bump, pitching seven innings in the loss. Turner Ashby pitched two scoreless innings in relief. The duo struck out nine and walked two Yankee hitters.

The highlight of the nine inning game was near error-less baseball, as only one error was committed. The Yanks infield of Joe Polichetti, Pantano, Brent Carmello, Rich Hofer and Jason Howard was flawless, turning two key double plays. Not to be out done, the Cubs flashed leather of their own, as Sam Agnew made a circus catch at the right field fence and Justin Fish snared a line drive at third base, both to kill Yankee rallies.

The Cubs finished as regular season champs with a (14-3) record, with all three losses coming at the hands of the Yanks, all in tight games. The Yanks finished the year (13-5), allowing only 4 runs in 25 innings of playoff baseball.
