Wednesday Travel League
Robert Calph shot the low round of 75 at Ironwood Golf Course in Cowlesville, edging Dave Criscione by one stroke. The 75 tied the league’s course record, held by Gary Richardson and Ed Tofil. Calph has now won or tied for the low score in seven of the past eight events, with all eight scores in the 70’s. Calph (75), Criscione (76) and Bill Aldrich (81) all tied their career low rounds. After Calph and Criscione, Ed Tofil shot 80 and Aldrich, Jeff Marsowicz and Jim Szalkowski all shot 81. On the front nine, Calph shot a 1-under par 35 and Criscione shot an even-par 36. On the back nine, Bill Merryweather shot a 38, with John Bongiovanni and Tofil shooting 39. Mike Willoughby and John Waterman won the B and C Flights, respectively. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Dennis Gawronski Sr.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight: Calph (Nos. 1, 3, 11), Aldrich (Nos. 7, 14) and Szalkowski (No. 13); B Flight: Mick Dunning Sr. (Nos. 3, 5) and Bongiovanni (No. 11); C Flight: Mike Wolfe (No. 5), Waterman (Nos. 6, 14) and Dave Franklin (Nos. 16, 17). Closest to the pin were Tom Destro (No. 2), Szalkowski (Nos. 8, 13) and Franklin (No. 17). Franklin’s tee shot came to rest less than one inch from the edge of the hole.

This week, the league plays its Fourth Annual “Commissioner’s Cup” at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Hill Course. The event is in loving memory of the late Bruce “Java” Chrabasz, past Commissioner of the league and friend to all. There will be a 9:32 a.m. shotgun start. Golfers are asked to dress in Cleveland Browns (Java’s favorite team) colors — Brown, orange and white. Golfers can sign up with John (785-2291) until Noon on Monday, when foursomes will be drawn. Festivities after golf will be held at the Dunkirk (4th Ward) Falcons Club.

Fredonia Basketball Clinic is underway
The Fredonia boys basketball program will be hosting open basketball “Drills & Skills Clinic” for all boys and girls who are residents of Fredonia in grades 1-8. There is no charge for the clinic.
The weekly clinic will take place on most Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 to 7:30 p.m. through September and October. The program will be held at the Wheelock School gymnasium.
Participants will focus on learning the game of basketball with an emphasis on skill development and game participation. Contact Greg Lauer at 912-2726 for more information.
Rod and Gun Club holding archery shoot
Today, Bear Lake Rod and Gun Club located at 4391 Cassadaga-Stockton Road, Stockton, will be holding it’s final 3-D archery non-competitive fun shoot for 2018. The walk through course will feature North American big game animal targets. Cost for adults 18 above is $12, 12-17 is $5 and under 12 are free. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and will continue to 1 p.m. Food will be available at the club. This will be a great opportunity for all bowhunters to practice before the start of archery season. Crossbow shooters are also encouraged to attend.
