Wednesday Travel League
The league held its Fourth Annual “Commissioner’s Cup,” a loving tribute to Bruce “Java” Chrabasz, our late great friend and Wednesday Travel League Commissioner. The tournament was held at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Hill Course with a season-high 56 golfers participating. A rain-soaked course and lightning-fast greens led to difficult scoring conditions. Jack Schrantz successfully defended his 2017 Commissioner’s Cup, matching Lee Titus’s back-to-back wins in 2015-16.
The low score of 85 was shot by Robert Calph, Adam Gornikiewicz, and Kevin Voss. On a tiebreaker, it took all the way to the 7th-Handicap hole for Gornikiewicz to be named the A Flight Winner. The win marks Gornikiewicz’s first career Tour Victory. Jim Szalkowski finished one-stroke behind with 86, followed by Al Etzel and Joe Michalski with 87’s. The low front nine score of 41 was shot by Calph, Gornikiewicz, Voss, Wayne Ormsby, and Ed Tofil while the low back nine score of 40 was shot by Szalkowski. Other flight winners were Bob Thompson (B), Doug Grace (C) and Jim Hofer (D). Schrantz also won the week’s Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight: Szalkowski (Nos. 3, 10), Ormsby (No. 4) and Michalski (Nos. 6, 17); B Flight: Mick Dunning Sr. (No. 4), Gary Richardson (No. 12) and Joe Tramuta (No. 13); C Flight: Tom Destro (No. 6), Dennis Gawronski Sr. (No. 7), Grace (No. 11), Gary Maternowski (No. 13), Bob Welch (No. 14) and Don Kujawa (No. 15); D Flight: Kurt Wolnik (Nos. 7, 18), Chris Ganey (No. 8), Jack Hood (No. 10), Joe Majka (No. 11), Mike Guziec Sr. (No. 12), Hofer (No. 14) and Brian Lore (No. 15).
Closest to the pin were Dave Wallace (No. 2), Michalski (No. 7), Maternowski (No. 13) and Calph (No. 15). Winners of the Par-3 contest were: A: Calph (+1), B: Thompson (+2), C: Gawronski (Even) and D: Wolnik (+4).
Top point winners were Maternowski (84), Gawronski (70), Michalski (63) and Kujawa (56). Season points leaders: 1. Mike Wolfe (539), 2. Dave Franklin (268), 3. Pat Weaver (255), 4. Tim Walawender (238), 5. Calph (217), 6. Pete Gawron (214), 7. Szalkowski (211), 8. Kujawa (195), 9. John Waterman (189), 10. Dave Criscione (188).
