Women’s Doubles Championship — The DLBA Women’s Doubles Championship tournament was recently held at Chick’s Lanes in Angola. Nineteen teams participated this year. Tournament champions, rolling a score of 1428, are Sara Tulipane and Debbie Skinner. Other prize winners included Penny Haight/Rose Spicer (1387); Connie Wocjinski/Marie Skubis (1383); Mallory Wocjinski/Barb Deluney (1360) and Shelly Coon/Kate Bixby (1356). Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all the teams who participated. The tournament next year is projected to be held at Lucky Lanes in Fredonia.

Wednesday Travel League

Ed Tofil shot the low round of 88, edging Robert Calph by one stroke on a cold, windy day at Cable Hollow Golf Course in Russell, PA. It was the league’s 550th official event since records began being kept in 2001. Tofil led the front nine with 43 while Bill Aldrich, Calph, and Jeff Kubera all led the back nine with 44. Dave Franklin won the B Flight on a tiebreaker over Joe Michalski and Danny Kubera. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jack Hood.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Ed Tofil (No. 3), Jeff Kubera (No. 12) and Calph (No. 13); B Flight — Pat Weaver (Nos. 1, 11), John Tofil (Nos. 3, 7), Michalski (No. 6), Franklin (No. 12) and Danny Kubera (No. 14). Closest to the pin were Mike Willoughby (No. 2), John Waterman (No. 5) and Mike Wolfe (Nos. 11, 17).

Top point winners were Wolfe (20) and Waterman, Danny Kubera, Weaver, John Tofil and Willoughby (10 each). Season points leaders: 1. Wolfe (26), 2. John Tofil (16), 3. Aldrich (15), 4. Danny Kubera, Waterman, Weaver and Willoughby (10 each), 8. Calph (9), 9. Jeff Kubera (8), 10. Gary Haase and Gary Richardson (6 each). Milestone hit this week: Waterman became the first golfer to play in 500 career events.

Next week the league returns to Cable Hollow for a third straight week. The first tee time is at 10:30 a.m. Golfers need to be signed up with John (785-2291) by Noon Monday.

Art Asquith Golf League registration is April 15

Registration for the Art Asquith Senior Golf League will be held at the Bemus Point Golf Course on Monday, 4/15 at 10 a.m. Registration for golfers 60 and over will be $20 with coffee and donuts available. The league has 24 matches set this year at courses around Western NY and Western Pennsylvania. The cost for golf, cart and a light lunch is $24 and the tour has six flights with small prizes available weekly. More information can be obtained from the league web site at www.sgolftour.com. Conditions permitting, golf and cart will be available at the course for a special $20 charge after the meeting.

The league is once again participating with the Bunkers in Baghdad charity which provides golf balls (just crossed the 10 million balls sent level) and supplies to our troops all over the world. Please bring balls you want to donate to the meeting.

20th annual Crouse 5K Challenge set for May 19

GOWANDA — Sponsored by the Gowanda Boosters Club, the 20th annual Crouse 5K Challenge will take place Sunday, May 19 at the Gowanda American Legion, 100 Legion Drive. The 5K challenge is at 4 p.m. and the 1/2 Mile Fun Run is at 5 p.m.

This milestone event will be followed by a post-race party with music, refreshments, prizes. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third-place finishers as well as overall among the age groups. Proceeds benefit the Dennis Crouse Sr. Scholarship and Gowanda Boosters Club’s efforts to support student opportunities in the Gowanda Central School District.

The 5K costs $15 (A special $10 student rate does not include a shirt) and the Half-Mile Fun Run costs $5.
