Wednesday Travel League

The league played Blueberry Hill Golf Club in Russell, PA, just three days after a tornado ripped through the course. The tornado’s path of destruction included 41 trees knocked down and another 40 snapped off. The course was limited to nine playable holes as crews continued to work hard to clean up.

Robert Calph shot the low round of 79 for his second victory of the season. Ed Tofil finished second with 81. Calph led the first nine with 40 while Tofil led the second nine with an even-par 36, finishing with birdies on the last two holes. Dave Franklin was the B Flight champion. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jack Hood.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight-Calph (Nos. 1,6,10), Mike Wolfe (No. 8), and Tofil (Nos. 14,17,18); B Flight-Gary Haase (No. 2), Hood (No. 6), John Waterman (No. 9), and Mike Willoughby (Nos. 11,18). Closest to the pin were Len Leszkowiczz (No. 4), Calph (Nos. 9,18) and Ken Kaus (No. 13).

Top point winners were Calph (33), Tofil (22), and Willoughby (17). Season points leaders: 1. Calph (42), 2. Wolfe (36), 3. Ed Tofil (34), 4. Joe Michalski (29), 5. Willoughby (27). 6. Bill Aldrich (23), 7. Waterman (22), 8. Franklin (17), 9. John Tofil and Hood (16 each). Milestone hit this week: Ed Tofil became just the second golfer in league history to reach 4,000 career points.

Next Wednesday the league travels to Venango Valley in Venango, PA. The first tee time is at 10:10 a.m. Golfers need to be signed up with John (785-2291) by Noon Monday.

Women Who Golf for Fun set for Wednesdays

The Women Who Golf for Fun are ready to begin the season. Golfers will meet every Wednesday and play the Hillview side of the Vineyards Golf Course. Tee off time will be at 10 a.m. No partner needed, no league fees and all skill levels are welcome — join a group of women who golf for fun. Play will begin when weather and course conditions permit. Dunkirk Moose Golf League meeting on April 23

The Dunkirk Moose Golf League will hold an organizational meeting on Tuesday, April 23 at Tim Hortons, 92 LSDE, beginning at 7 p.m.

The league golfs on Thursday’s beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Vineyards. Returning players and new golfers are welcome. Any questions about the league or if you plan on golfing but cannot make the meeting please call Rick Mazurek 366-6835.

Summer softball meeting May 1 in Dunkirk

There will be an organizational meeting for all teams interested in playing softball this summer on Wednesday, May 1. The meeting will be held at the Dunkirk Senior Center located at 45 Cliffstar Court in Dunkirk.

Those interested in Men’s Fast Pitch Softball will meet at 5:30 p.m. Co-ed Slo Pitch Softball will meet at 6:30 p.m.

All teams should be represented at his meeting. Any teams wishing to participate but are unable to attend this meeting should call Patty in the Recreation Office at 366-9885.

Wednesday Night Women’s League meets May 1

Vineyards Golf Course Womens League has moved back to Wednesday night for the 2019 season. There will be a meeting on Wednesday, May 1 at 5 p.m. at the Vineyards clubhouse. The League has openings for teams and subs. Play will begin with a scramble on May 8 on the Vineyards North course. League play will start May 15 on the Vineyards South course. Monday Night Golf League to start May 13

The Wednesday Night Golf League at the Vineyards will now be playing on Monday nights starting at 4 p.m. on the north side.

The format will be the same as before. Handicap scoring two-person teams. There are a few spots open, if interested contact Bob Manning at 679-5799 or John Lakas at 679-6890. The league hopes to start with a scramble on May 13 with all golfers meeting on the north side at 4 p.m. The league is open all golfers, no matter what your golfing skills are, as it is handicap scoring.

20th annual Crouse 5K Challenge set for May 19

GOWANDA — Sponsored by the Gowanda Boosters Club, the 20th annual Crouse 5K Challenge will take place Sunday, May 19 at the Gowanda American Legion, 100 Legion Drive. The 5K challenge is at 4 p.m. and the 1/2 Mile Fun Run is at 5 p.m.

This milestone event will be followed by a post-race party with music, refreshments, prizes. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third-place finishers as well as overall among the age groups. Proceeds benefit the Dennis Crouse Sr. Scholarship and Gowanda Boosters Club’s efforts to support student opportunities in the Gowanda Central School District.

The 5K costs $15 (A special $10 student rate does not include a shirt) and the Half-Mile Fun Run costs $5.
