Men’s Senior Baseball League

Pro-Bats Yankees 6,

Gowanda Phoenix Lodge #262 Cubs 3

Opening day of the 2019 CMSBL saw a rematch of last year’s championship game, with the Yankees topping the injury-depleted Cubs, despite being out hit nine to seven. The defending champs used last year’s winning formula (league leading 2.85 ERA) of pitching and defense to seal the deal. The Bombers used six pitchers in the victory; Justyn Vara, Allan Carmello, Matt Eaker (win), Dennis Gawronski, Joe Pantano and Austin Alonge. The group collectively struck out seven and walked one, with Alonge striking out the side in the seventh for the save. The Yankees turned two key double plays in the victory. At the plate, Gawronski (double, two RBI) and Pantano (double RBI) struck the key blows, while Eaker and Jason Howard each had RBI singles.

For the Cubbies, Jamie Wallschlager (two hits, two runs), Neil Mangan (two hits) and Justin Fish (double, two RBI) led the charge at the dish. Pitchers Mangan, Fish and Wallschlager combined to strike out seven and walk three Yankee batters. Five errors hurt the Cubs, accounting for three unearned Yankee runs.
