Fredonia Minor League Softball

Mary’s Deli vs. Betts Insurance

In Game 1 of a doubleheader, Izzy Czekanski led Mary’s with two hits, while Jenna Fryberger and Cora Wojcinski added singles. Brianna Dougherty contributed with a hit and a strong pitching performance. Betts Insurance was led by Rylan Jakse, Taylor Pinzok and Kali DeGolier with two hits each. Liberty Maring added a single and three shutout innings on the mound. In Game 2, Mary’s Deli was led by Bryleigh Wicks and Jenna Fryberger, who only allowed one run through four innings on the mound combined. Brianna Dougherty, Katherine Proper, Braelynn Wicks and Yaeliz Alvarez added hits. Taylor Pinzok was the star for Betts Insurance, making several excellent defensive plays from the pitcher’s mound, along with adding two hits. Rylan Jakse and Caylee Pinzok added two hits each.

Frank Polechetti Golf Tournament

The annual Frank Polechetti golf tournament was held June 1 at Shorewood Country Club. A total of seven clubs participated, with the Lakeside club walking away victorious and the Dunkirk Falcons taking second.

Cloest to the pin was Don Willis on No. 6 and Jaime Ruiz on No. 15.

Skins were had by Mike Ringler on Nos. 1 and 12, Mick Dunning on No. 6, Pete Smith on No. 9, Bill Anderson on No. 13, Blake Thrig on No. 14, Larry Lundin on No. 15 and Abe Rak on No. 16.

City of Dunkirk Jr. Home Run Derby is Saturday

The City of Dunkirk Youth and Recreation Department proudly presents the 2019 Jr. Home Run Derby, this Saturday, at Kochs Field at Point Gratiot. The event is free and open to all boys and girls ages 10-14, and begins at 12 p.m. There will be one winner from each age division, 14U and 12U.

Registration is encouraged by Thursday. With questions or to register, contact the Dunkirk Youth and Recreation Office at 366-9885 or 366-9886, or by emailing Ryan Hall at rhall@cityofdunkirk.com.

Gowanda 16U softball tourney set for July 27

Gowanda Recreation will hold their annual 16U girls fast pitch softball tournament on Saturday, July 27 at Gateway Park. This is a four-team, round tournament with each team guaranteed three games. Awards and prizes for each team that participates. Entry fee is $65. Call Recreation Director Mark Benton at 532-4053 or email hidibenton@gmail.com to register a team.

American Legion’s District Golf Tourney June 14

On Friday, June 14, the American Legion will be hosting the 2019 District Golf Tournament at the Vineyards Golf course. This is a four-person team outing of 18 holes, with a shotgun start at noon, asking golfers to arrive at 11:15 a.m. to sign in. The cost is $60 per person ($240 per team) for greens fee, cart, prizes and a steak dinner at the Dunkirk Memorial Post 62 on Central Ave. in Dunkirk. This is open to the members and non members of the American Legions. To sign up, call Stan Kawski the 8th District Golf Chair at 716-792-9462. Come out and support your American Legions on flag day.

Gym Rats Basketball Camp set for July 22-26

The Fredonia boys basketball program will be hosting its seventh annual ‘Gym Rats Basketball Camp’ this July at the Wheelock Primary School Gym. The camp is for boys and girls ages 4-9 and will be held the week of July 22-26. The camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon daily. Campers will participate in lead-up games, relay races, and a lot of passing, dribbling, ball handling and shooting. All campers get a free t-shirt, basketball and daily snack. The cost for the camp is $75 or $115 for two family members. If you register by June 15, The cost for camp is $65 per child, $100 for two family members, or $150 for three or more family members.

The Bella’s Women’s League starts June 13

The Bellas Women’s League at Vineyards Golf Course will begin their 2019 season on Thursday, June 13. The league has moved to Thursday mornings name draw at 9:30 a.m., tee offs begin at 10 a.m. Join at any time, no partner needed. All skill levels are welcome.
