Tuesday Night Utility League for June 11

Vineyards Golf Course

In play this week at the Vineyards Golf Course front nine Matt Hutchinson’s 45 topped the Tuesday Night Utility League contestants.

Chris Penfold and Lee Szalkowski each recorded a 46, with Penfold adding the lone skin for the round and Tom McTigue was closest to the pin on No. 5.

Rosebrook Golf Course

The league visited Rosebrook Golf Course for the very first time, making it the 66th different course to be played since 2001. Robert Calph shot the low round of 75 to earn his fifth tour victory of the season. Al Etzel was second with 80 and Wayne Stoughton was third with 81. Calph and Chad Gollnitz each shot an even-par 37 for the low front nine while Calph, Joe Michalski, and Bob Thompson all shot 38 for the low back nine score. Gary Richardson and Dan Kaszuba won the B and C Flights, respectively. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Bill Aldrich.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight-Gollnitz Nos. 3 and 17 and Stoughton No. 11; B Flight-Joe Bifaro Nos. 2 and 12, Richardson No. 6, Mike Willoughby No. 7, Mike Wolfe No. 9, Gary Haase No. 11, John Waterman No. 17, and Pat Weaver No. 18; C Flight-Frank Benamati No. 1, Aldrich No. 5, Kaszuba No. 8, and Dennis Gawronski Sr. No. 13. Closest to the pin were Haase No. 4, Thompson No. 10, Bifaro Nos. 12 and 13, and Calph No. 16.

Top point winners were Bifaro (69), Haase (20) and Gollnitz (18). Season points leaders: 1. Ed Tofil (174), 2. Calph (141), 3. Haase (125), 4. Waterman (82), 5. Wolfe (77), 6. Thompson (73), 7. Etzel and Bifaro (69), 9. Tom Destro (55), 10. Weaver (51).

This week the league plays Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course with a 10:30 tee time. Golfers are asked to be signed up with John(785-2291) by noon today.

Vineyards Junior Golf Program starts June 25

With the 2019 school year coming to a close, the Junior Golf Program is right around the corner at the Vineyards Golf Course, with instructor Greg Catalano. The cost is $75 per child ages 8-17. The program will be held at 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for six weeks, starting June 25 through July 30, including five lessons and one golf outing, with prizes and lunch. Anyone interested, please call the course at 672-7888 or email the course at g_vineyards@yahoo.com and leave your child’s name and age with contact info. For children younger than eight years old, or for private adult lessons, you may inquire by calling the course, as well.

Free Dunkirk H.S. sports physicals on June 27

The Dunkirk High School Athletic Department announces the date of Thursday, June 27 for free mandatory sports physicals at the DHS nurse’s office, starting at 8:30 a.m. All athletes are encouraged to attend. The free physical will be good for the whole school year, beginning in September. Parents can go online to the school website or stop by the school to pick up the required physical form prior to June 27.

All athletes need an updated physical prior to playing a fall sport, which begin Aug. 19. Any questions, call the DHS athletic office at ext. 2083.

Kiwanis Club Charity Golf Tourney is June 28

On Friday, June 28, the Silver Creek Kiwanis Club is seeking participants for its 24th Annual Charity Golf Tournament. It will be held at Tri-County Country Club in Forestville. The day will include a continental breakfast, golf, lunch, appetizers and prizes. Check in is from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m., rain or shine. The format is a four-man scramble.

The Kiwanis Club supports children in the communities of Silver Creek, Forestville, Sheridan, Irving and the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. Their work is funded solely through fundraisers and contributions. It is the goal of this club to continue to have a meaningful impact on our community’s children.

Entry fee is $110 ($95 if paid by June 21). Deadline to register is June 26. Numerous sponsorships, tee signage and raffle opportunities exist. Email your questions or interest to Gailmiller3@aol.com.

Gowanda 16U softball tourney set for July 27

Gowanda Recreation will hold their annual 16U girls fast pitch softball tournament on Saturday, July 27 at Gateway Park. This is a four-team, round tournament with each team guaranteed three games. Awards and prizes for each team that participates. Entry fee is $65. Call Recreation Director Mark Benton at 532-4053 or email hidibenton@gmail.com to register a team.

Gym Rats Basketball Camp set for July 22-26

The Fredonia boys basketball program will be hosting its seventh annual ‘Gym Rats Basketball Camp’ this July at the Wheelock Primary School Gym. The camp is for boys and girls ages 4-9 and will be held the week of July 22-26. The camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon daily. Campers will participate in lead-up games, relay races, and a lot of passing, dribbling, ball handling and shooting. All campers get a free t-shirt, basketball and daily snack. The cost for the camp is $75 or $115 for two family members. If you register by June 15, The cost for camp is $65 per child, $100 for two family members, or $150 for three or more family members.

Fredonia girls basketball camp announced

The Fredonia Central School Girls Basketball Camp will be held June 27-29 at the Fredonia High School and Middle School gymnasiums from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Fredonia Central School Boys Basketball Camp will be held July 1-3 at the Fredonia High School and Middle School gymnasiums from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Due to the construction project at the main campus, each camp will be for three days this year, instead of four days like years past.

Cost for each camp is $80 at the door, or $70 if paid by June 15. The camp is open to boys and girls entering grades 3 through 12. All campers will receive a camp T-shirt.

Each athlete is expected to arrive by 9 a.m. and are expected to bring their own lunch.
