Men’s Senior Baseball League

Pro-bats Yankees 5, L’il Magills Giants 4

Dennis “Waxy” Gawronski struck out the final two batters of the game, with the tying and winning runs on base, to earn the save and help the Yankees (4-0) edge the Giants (2-3) in CMSBL action. Justin Vara (2-0) earned the win on the mound for the Yanks, despite allowing nine hits. Vara and Gawronski combined to strike out 11 Giants hitters. Vara was aided by a diving bases-loaded stab of a Giants’ line-drive to end a threat in the fifth frame. Joe Polichetti led the way at the plate for the Bombers going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. However, it was Matt Eaker’s sac fly in the top of the seventh to drive in Polichetti that proved to be the winning run. Jason Howard also added two RBI. The Giants were paced at the plate by Jared Aiken (two hits, run), League President Shawn Hennessey (two hits, run), Josh Strzelac (two hits) and Ryan Bonnas (two hits). Alberto Benejan chipped in with two RBI of his own. Strzelac pitched a stellar complete game in the tough luck loss, allowing only six hits and one walk, while striking out nine. He was helped by the solid third base defensive play of Jonathan Cordova.
