Dunkirk Lakefront 5k scheduled for Aug. 3

The 20th annual Dunkirk Lakefront 5K will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 9 a.m., beginning on the Dunkirk Boardwalk. All proceeds benefit the Dunkirk High School track and field program. The event is part of the 2019 Striders Runner of the Year series. Visit lakefront5k.com for registration.

Fredonia Hockey Camp set for Aug. 26-29

The Fredonia Blue Devils are hosting a youth hockey camp for boys and girls ages 5-12. The camp will be held from Aug. 26-29 at Steele Hall Ice Arena, from 10 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. each day. Dunkirk Lakeshore Bowling board meets Thursday

The Dunkirk Lakeshore Bowling Association will have its quarterly meeting on Thursday, July 25 at 7 p.m. at the First Ward Falcons Club in Dunkirk. It is open to all USBC members and a few board seats are open. Anyone interested on being on the board is encouraged to spread the word.

Tri-County Youth Football Clinic set for Friday

The 18th Annual Tri-County Youth Football Clinic will be held on Friday, July 26 from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. at Gateway Park in Gowanda. Offensive skills will be taught along with a touch football tournament, awards and pizza party. The clinic is free of charge and open to the first 40 athletes ages 7-13 that register by calling clinic director Mark Benton at 532-4053 or email hidibenton@gmail.com.

Gowanda 16U softball tournament is Saturday

Gowanda Recreation will hold their annual 16U girls fast pitch softball tournament on Saturday, July 27 at Gateway Park. This is a four-team, round tournament with each team guaranteed three games. Awards and prizes for each team that participates. Entry fee is $65. Call Recreation Director Mark Benton at 532-4053 or email hidibenton@gmail.com to register a team.

Gowanda old timers softball game set for Sunday

The third Annual Gowanda men’s slow pitch softball league old timers game and reunion (1974-1996) will be held at Gateway Park on Sunday, July 28. Batting practice will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a 9-inning game. Former league players over the age of 45 are encouraged to attend and play a few innings, if not the whole game. A team picnic will follow. Call Mark Benton at 532-4053 to make reservations.

DHS, CMHS, FHS Alumni Golf Tourney Aug. 2

The 10th annual Alumni Tournament is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 2 at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk. The event will feature graduates from Dunkirk High School, Cardinal Mindszenty High School and Fredonia High School. The 2019 youth orgainazational recipients include the Dunkirk-Fredonia Little League and girls softball programs. Honorary starters of the event will be Dunkirk Mayor Willie Rosas and Jack Shubert, Shorewood “Pro Emeritus.”

Registration the morning of the event begins at 8:30 a.m., located in the “Grove” next to the Pro-Shop. The attendees will pose for a group photo at 9:54 a.m., then will begin the event in a shotgun start, scramble format, beginning at 10 a.m. There will be a $500 Hole-in-one Contest, sponsored by Mary Asher in memory of Tom Asher.

The cost of the event is $80, which includes golf, cart, coffee, dinner buffet and dessert. There is also a free Sahlen hot dog on the Par 3, Hole No. 6 — the Hole-in-one Contest hole. A cash bar is open at 3 p.m. and dinner will be at 4:30 p.m. Trophy presentation and door prizes, along with a silent auction, will be following dinner.

Annual Grape Belt Open is Aug. 10 at Pinehurst

The third annual Grape Belt Open is set for Aug. 10 at Pinehurst Golf Club in Westfield. The event is a four-person scramble format and includes refreshments, dinner and awards. All proceeds benefit the Grape Discovery Center, allowing the center to continue and operate as a non-profit, encourage tourism and educate all about the grape growing history in the Lake Erie Region. They are currently seeking Tee and Corporate sponsors for the event. Tee sponsorship is $50. If interested or with questions, call Lisa at (716) 969-4859.

Westfield Union Relief golf tourney is Aug. 17

The 13th annual Westfield Union Relief Association’s “Golfing for Gifts” Tournament will be held Aug. 17, at Pinehurst Golf Course, in Westfield. Union Relief relies on dues paid by its members, donations of money, food, clothing, and presents from the community and fundraising events to fulfill its mission of lending support to families with children, shut-ins and senior citizens. The organization also provides assistance when specific circumstances arise — like a sudden illness or loss of income, a household fire or a natural disaster. Teams of four are being sought to participate. This is a scramble tournament with a shotgun start. Registration fee is $280 a foursome ($70/person) which includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, prizes and lunch. There will also be a Chinese Auction on site.
