Shorewood Country Club Championships

The 2019 Shorewood Country Club Championships were held July 27 and 28. The format was individual medal play and featured three Men’s Flights as well as a Women’s Division. In the Women’s Division, Jenny Ringler secured the Championship with rounds of 83-76. Ringler used her excellent second round to secure the title by eight shots over runner-up Sue Marsh. In the Men’s Championship, Kevin Kaszuba secured his 10th title by shooting an even par 72, to move past several competitors. His even par round was enough for a two shot cushion over second place finishers Josh Harrington and Dave Newton. In Men’s Flight play, Rick Ketcham and Chad Artrip secured their respective flights.

Metro League 10U softball playoffs

Fredonia Fury 13, Amherst Thunder 6

The Fury advanced to the Metro League 10U B Division championship game with a solid win over Amherst. Joce Miller led the way defensively and offensively with three hits, including a double. Anna Delcamp was 2-for-2 with a triple and Reece Schuster also had two hits, including a triple. Jillian Miller ripped a double, while Callie Draggett and McKenna Crawford added hits for the Fury. Naomi Muck was stellar on the mound to earn the pitching victory.

Lou Gehrig Lasers 14, Fredonia Fury 7

The Fury fell short in the championship game of the Metro League 10U B Division, but earned the runner-up trophy in their inaugural season. Joce Miller was 3-for-4 with a double and Callie Draggett ripped a long home run for the Fury. Reece Shuster went 2-for-2 with a double and Anna Delcamp added a single. Naomi Muck was strong in relief on the mound in the losing effort.

DHS, CMHS, FHS Alumni Golf Tourney is Friday

The 10th annual Alumni Tournament is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 2 at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk. The event will feature graduates from Dunkirk High School, Cardinal Mindszenty High School and Fredonia High School. The 2019 youth orgainazational recipients include the Dunkirk-Fredonia Little League and girls softball programs. Honorary starters of the event will be Dunkirk Mayor Willie Rosas and Jack Shubert, Shorewood “Pro Emeritus.”

Registration the morning of the event begins at 8:30 a.m., located in the “Grove” next to the Pro-Shop. The attendees will pose for a group photo at 9:54 a.m., then will begin the event in a shotgun start, scramble format, beginning at 10 a.m. There will be a $500 Hole-in-one Contest, sponsored by Mary Asher in memory of Tom Asher.

The cost of the event is $80, which includes golf, cart, coffee, dinner buffet and dessert. There is also a free Sahlen hot dog on the Par 3, Hole No. 6 — the Hole-in-one Contest hole. A cash bar is open at 3 p.m. and dinner will be at 4:30 p.m. Trophy presentation and door prizes, along with a silent auction, will be following dinner.

Dunkirk Lakefront 5k is scheduled for Saturday

The 20th annual Dunkirk Lakefront 5K will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 9 a.m., beginning on the Dunkirk Boardwalk. All proceeds benefit the Dunkirk High School track and field program. The event is part of the 2019 Striders Runner of the Year series. Visit lakefront5k.com for registration.

Forestville basketball to hold car wash Saturday

The Forestville girls and boys basketball programs will be holding a car wash fundraiser at the Wal-Mart in Fredonia on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The donations will be $5 presale or $7 the day of.
