Wednesday Travel League

Robert Calph won his 11th event of the season with the low round of 75 at Elk Valley Golf Course in Girard, PA, and tied the league course record held by Tony Nicosia. Calph also earned his 33rd career tour victory, moving him past Joe Piwowarski into seventh place all-time. Joe Michalski was second with 81 and John Waterman was third with 82. Calph birdied three of the first four holes en route to a 1-under par 35 to lead the front nine. On the back nine, Calph’s 40 was matched by Michalski and Al Etzel. In the B Flight, Wayne Ormsby won on a tiebreaker over Mike Wolfe and Frank Benamati. The C Flight winner was Mike Willoughby. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jack Hood.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Calph (Nos. 1, 3, 4, 10), Chad Gollnitz (Nos. 7, 15), Michalski (No. 8), Waterman (No. 14) and Ed Tofil (No. 17); B Flight — Jim Ellman Sr. (No. 3), Ken Kaus (No. 4), Ormsby (Nos. 5, 6, 18), Matt Kessler (No. 9), Wolfe (No. 10) and Benamati (No. 13); C Flight — Bill Aldrich (Nos. 2, 6), Willoughby (Nos. 3, 5, 14), Tony Destro (Nos. 9, 11) and Hood (No. 18). The league would like to thank Al and Carol Etzel for their fine job hosting this week’s event. This coming Wednesday, the league holds its fourth Major of the season, the “Frank Borowski Invitational,” at Kane Country Club in Kane, PA. The first group tees off at 10 a.m. Golfers must be signed up with John (785-2291) by 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Sons of the Legion Golf Tournament Aug. 24

The Sons of the Legion in Brocton will be holding its annual golf tournament on Aug. 24. The tournament is being held at Pinehurst golf course in Westfield. The format is a four-person scramble with shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $55 per person ($220) per team. This tournament will have prizes, 50/50, mulligans, hotdog at the turn, followed by dinner at the Brocton Legion. This tournament is open to everyone. You do not need to be a Legion member to participate. Proceeds will be used to help veterans and local youth organizations. Openings still exist. Dunkirk Football mattress sale set for Aug. 25

The Dunkirk Marauder football team is holding their annual mattress sale on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Located in the auxiliary gym in Dunkirk High School, name brand items are on display and for sale at a huge discount. Free lay-a-way and delivery is available.

As a result of the community’s generosity over the last five years, Dunkirk Football has been able to pay for camps, transportation, championship jackets, senior jackets, fitness memberships and more, which has helped the program become very successful. Dunkirk coach Mike Sarratori thanks the community for all of its help and support.

Lakeshore bowling board meeting on Aug. 29

We will be having a special meeting to fill the vacancy of president for the association. Meeting is Thursday Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at First Ward Falcons Club. Open to all usbc members. Anyone interested in getting involved in the local association please attend.

Fredonia Hockey Camp set for Aug. 26-29

The Fredonia Blue Devils are hosting a youth hockey camp for boys and girls ages 5-12. The camp will be held from Aug. 26-29 at Steele Hall Ice Arena, from 10 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. each day. Al Tech Reunion Golf Tourney set for Sept. 21

Plans are being made for the Al Tech Reunion Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Cable Hollow Golf Course. The cost is $60, which includes 18 holes with cart at Cable Hollow Golf Course, food at the turn, and dinner at Russell Joy Park Pavilion provided by Super Duper catering. There will be a separate fee of $5 for skins and closest to the pins, payable at the course. Send check payable to Rick Bellando, 24 Westerly Dr. Fredonia, NY 14063, no later than Saturday, Sept. 7.
