Wednesday Travel League

Al Etzel won his third event of the season with the low round of 77 at Diamond Hawk Golf Course in Cheektowaga. The course was extremely wet after the area was hit with heavy showers during the early morning. Matt Kessler was second with 81 and Mike Wolfe was third with 83. Etzel led both the front (38) and back (39) nines. In the B Flight, Tony Destro won on a tiebreaker with Bob Thompson. Dave Franklin won the C Flight. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award — in his league debut — was Bob Kujawa.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Wolfe (No. 1), Danny Kubera (Nos. 6, 12), Kessler (Nos. 9, 13, 15) and Bill Aldrich (No. 14); B Flight — Mike Willoughby (No. 10) and Gary Haase (No. 13); C Flight — Dave Miller (Nos. 2, 4, 15), Dave Momberger (No. 5), Kujawa (No. 7), Wayne Ormsby (No. 8), Pat Weaver (No. 9) and Jack Hood (No. 13). Closest to the pin were Dan Kaszuba (No. 4), Kubera (No. 6), Haase (No. 13) and Etzel (No. 17).

Top point winners were Kubera (47), Kessler (42), Haase (39) and Hood (26). Season points leaders: 1. Robert Calph (339), 2. Ed Tofil (274), 3. Wolfe (271), 4. Haase (241), 5. Thompson (188), 6. Tom Destro (181), 7. Kessler (174), 8. Miller (169), 9. Weaver (157), 10. John Waterman (155). Milestone hit this week: Pat Weaver moved past Butch Mackowiak into 5th place on the All-Time Points List.

This Wednesday the league will hold its biggest event of the season, “The Commissioner’s Cup,” honoring the memory of our great friend and fellow golfer Bruce “Java” Chrabasz. The first tee time is at 9 a.m. at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course. Dinner will follow golf at the Dunkirk (4th Ward) Falcon Club. Interested golfers must be signed up by Noon Monday, when foursomes will be drawn and turned in. Golfers can sign up by texting or calling John at 785-2291.

Tri-County Country Club
