Wednesday Travel League

The league held its fifth-annual “Commissioner’s Cup,” honoring the memory of our late great friend and fellow golfer, former league Commissioner Bruce “Java” Chrabasz. The tournament was held at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course under ideal weather and had 51 golfers participating. Golfers wore outfits of Orange, Brown and White in the the colors of Java’s favorite team, the Cleveland Browns. The 2019 winner of the Commissioner’s Cup and the winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Bob Kujawa. Two-time defending champion Jack Schrantz was unable to golf and defend his title, but was on hand to congratulate the new champion. The flight winners were — A: Robert Calph, B: Al Etzel, C: Wayne Ormsby and D: Dan Kaszuba.

Calph shot the low overall round of 79 to earn his league-best 12th Tour Victory of the season. Jeff Kubera finished second with 82. In a tie for third place with 85 were Joe Michalski, Butch Mackowiak and Mick Dunning Sr. Calph and Michalski were low on the front nine with 38, while Calph, Kubera and John Waterman were low on the back nine with 41. Joe Woloszyn holed out his third shot from 100 yards out on the par-5 5th hole for his first career eagle. Mackowiak moved past Pat Weaver into fifth place on the all-time points list.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight: Dave Wallace (Nos. 3, 16), Calph (No. 9), Mackowiak (No. 10), Jeff Kubera (No. 12), Dave Criscione (No. 15) and Waterman (No. 17); B Flight: Gary Richardson (No. 2), Woloszyn (No. 5, eagle), Mike Wolfe (No. 9), Dave Momberger (No. 11) and Mike Willoughby (No. 18); C Flight: John Lakas (No. 1), Ken Kaus (No. 3), Danny Kubera (No. 9), Don Kujawa (No. 10), Gary Haase (Nos. 11, 16), Ormsby (No. 13), John Tofil (No. 17) and Jeff Marsowicz (No. 18); D Flight: Lenny Leszkowicz (No. 3), Jim Hofer (No. 4), Tony Destro (No. 8), Ange Leone (No. 13), Gary Maternowksi (No. 15) and Pete Pinkoski (No. 17).

Closest to the pin were John Bongiovanni Jr. (No. 4), Willoughby (No. 6), Calph (No. 8), Bill Aldrich (No. 12) and Joe Tramuta (No. 15). Winners of the Par-3 contest were — A: Jeff Kubera (+1), B: Tramuta (+2), C: Paul Olkowski (+2), D: Leone (+5). The winning team in the Cleveland Browns Ball contest was Ed Tofil, Doug Grace, Momberger and Olkowski with a score of 87.

Top point winners were Jeff Kubera (64), Criscione (51), Willoughby (46), Wallace and Haase (40) and Calph, Tramuta and Woloszyn (39). Season points leaders: 1. Calph (378), 2. Ed Tofil (287), 3. Wolfe (284), 4. Haase (281), 5. Bob Thompson (188), 6. Tom Destro (181), 7. Waterman (175), 8. Matt Kessler (174), 9. Aldrich (171), 10. Dave Miller (169).

This week, the league plays Green Meadows in North East, PA. The first tee time is at 10 a.m. Golfers must be signed up by noon on Monday with John at 785-2291.

Vineyards Chicken BBQ set for Saturday

The Vineyards Golf Course is having a Customer Appreciation Chicken BBQ on Saturday, Sept. 21, with dinner from 4-6 p.m. by Weidner Chicken BBQ and music from Cosmic Cowboys from 4-7 p.m. Dinner tickets are $10 for guests and members are ask to stop at the club house for details.

The Vineyards Golf Course is also accepting memberships for the 2020 season at this time. Sign up before Oct. 1 for savings on your membership. If you are interested in joining or starting a league, please contact Jason at the clubhouse at 672-7888.

Al Tech Reunion Golf Tourney is on Saturday

The Al Tech Reunion Golf Tournament is on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Cable Hollow Golf Course. The cost is $60, which includes 18 holes with cart at Cable Hollow Golf Course food at the turn. Dinner at Russell Joy Park Pavilion will be provided by Super Duper catering. There will be a separate fee of $5 for skins and closest to the pin’s payable at the course. Send check payable to Rick Bellando, 24 Westerly Dr. Fredonia, NY 14063 no later than Saturday Sept. 14. The first group tees off at 10 a.m. Registration is 9:30 a.m.

Southern Tier Regulators baseball clinic Sept. 28

The Southern Tier Regulators will be hosting a youth clinic at the Fredonia Little League Fields on Clinton Street in Fredonia. The clinic is Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for interested players ages 5-12, from all the surrounding area. Players can pre-register or sign up the day of clinic starting at 9 a.m.

The cost is $20 per player. The clinic will have instruction in fielding, throwing accuracy, base running as well as hitting drills. There will also be competitions, as well as possible game play. Circuit Training registration underway in Gowanda

The Adult Education division of Gowanda Central School District is pleased to announce a Circuit Training class will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the weight room at Gowanda High School.

Circuit training is a great boredom buster where you move quickly from one exercise to the next so your mind doesn’t have time to wander or tune out.

The course kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 24 and runs through Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, with instructor Steve Maines, a certified physical education teacher.

Fee options: Three times per week is 37 classes for $105. Twice per week is 25 classes for $75. Once per week is 13 classes for $45. Or pay as you go for $5 per class.

Commit to be fit with Zumba at Gowanda

GOWANDA — Registration is underway Zumba, a fitness offering via the Adult Education division of the Gowanda Central School District.

This high-energy, fun cardio dance workout with instructor Erin Ranic will be held Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the gym at Gowanda Elementary School on Aldrich Street. Workouts kick off Sept. 25 and end Dec. 18, 2019.

The fee is $45 for all 12 sessions or pay as you go for $5 per class.
