Pinehurst Golf Club

Wednesday Travel League — Robert Calph and Tony Destro tied for the low score of 84 at Pinehurst Golf Club in Westfield. Strong, at times ridiculous, winds blew throughout the round, making scoring conditions quite difficult both in the air and on the greens. Calph was the overall winner on a tiebreaker and matched his own record of 13 tour wins in a season, which he set last year. Destro earned his first career tour victory and became the first golfer to win(shooting the low score) an event while playing from the Senior tees. Dave Criscione and Gary Richardson tied for third place with 85’s. Destro and Criscione led the front nine with 42 and Calph led the back nine with 39. In the B Flight, John Waterman edged Bill Aldrich on a tiebreaker. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Lenny Leszkowicz.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight-Don Kujawa (No. 3), Richardson (Nos. 4, 16), Destro (Nos. 9, 18), and Calph (No.13); B Flight-Gary Haase(No.2), Angelo Leone (No. 7), Ken Kaus (No. 12), and Waterman (No. 18). Closest to the pin were Dave Wallace (No. 4), Leone (No. 7), Waterman (No. 13), and Richardson (No. 16-18 inches from the cup).

Top point winners were Richardson(38), Leone(23), and Waterman(16). Season points leaders: 1.Calph(393), 2.Mike Wolfe(345), 3.Haase(290), 4.Ed Tofil(287), 5.Bob Thompson(259), 6.Waterman(207), 7.Tom Destro(191), 8.Criscione and Wayne Ormsby(183), 10.Aldrich(182), 11.Matt Kessler(174), 12.Dave Miller(169), 13.Mike Willoughby(166), 14.Pat Weaver and Tony Destro(163), 16.Kujawa(160), 17.Al Etzel(147), 18.Kaus(146), 19.Dave Franklin(140), 20.Leszkowicz(128). Milestones hit this week: Waterman became the first golfer to reach 5,000 career points and was also the first golfer to record 100 career Closest-to-the-pins.

For the rest of this year, league play will depend upon the weather and course availability. Golfers will be alerted via email by Mondays as to the details of that week’s event. Interested golfers can also contact John(785-2291) no earlier than Mondays for details.
