Catt. County HOF nominations due Saturday

The 18th Annual Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame banquet is set for Saturday, March 28 at the Cattaraugus Firemen’s Club beginning at 6 p.m. The cost for tickets remains at $25 per person. Another sellout crowd is expected.

Nominations are now being sought for this year’s class of inductees. Candidates for induction must have a minimum of twenty years of combined experience as a high school, college or amateur all-star caliber athlete, youth, high school and/or college coach, game official and sports administrator. The committee is still looking for nominations from Portville, Ellicottville, Randolph, Salamanca, Hinsdale, Allegany-Limestone and West Valley.

The deadline for nominations is Feb. 1. All nominations can be sent to Mark Benton, banquet chairman at hidibenton@gmail.com or call 532-4053.

High School Bowling Challenge is Sunday

The 10th annual High School Bowling Challenge will take place this Sunday, Feb. 2 at Lucky Lanes in Fredonia at noon. The entry fee will be $12.

The tournament is only open to bowlers that are members of a high school bowling team, and will feature separate divisions for boys and girls. The handicap used will be 90 % of 200, and it is up to the bowlers to know their own average. Plaques will be given to the champion and runner up in each division.

All bowlers bowl three games with handicap to achieve a qualifying score. After qualifying, the top six bowlers with handicap in each division will advance to the semi-finals. All six bowlers in the semi-finals bowl one game with handicap to cut to the top three. The high bowler will then be seeded into the final game, while second and third will bowl a one game match head-to-head with handicap, with the winner facing the top bowler for the semi-finals title.

The tournament will use a special oil pattern — the same pattern that will be used for the 2020 Section VI Championships and the NYS Championships.

For more information, contact Tournament Director Todd Langworthy at 716-672-2695. Bowlers are encouraged to wear their high school jersey.
