Softball team splits; Feldman finishes 11th in 400 prelims

CLERMONT, Fla. — Fredonia scored in every inning Friday against Penn State New Kensington to earn a split of their two games at The Spring Games.

Maddie Cooley smashed a three-run homer to cap a four-run fourth inning as part of a 10-2 win over New Kensington. It was Cooley’s second homer of the spring.

Emily Shellenberger was the winning pitcher (2-1) as the Blue Devils improved to 5-3. Katie Yudin had three hits and Cooley had two as part of an 11-hit attack. Khee Nance (Dunkirk) collected two RBIs while Erin Mushtare doubled and Katelyn Dennis tripled.

Shellenberger pitched a complete-game — the game was stopped in the last of the fifth by the mercy rule — while allowing six hits and both New Kensington runs.

Fredonia dropped the opener, 8-2, as Muhlenberg constructed a five-run second inning around one walk, three hits, and one bases-clearing error. Freshman right-hander Sam Seegar was the losing pitcher (2-1). Yudin and Mahogany Barker each had an RBI while Mushtare doubled and Nikki Lent tripled.

On Thursday, Fredonia used a late rally to overtake Emmanuel and earn another split at The Spring Games.

Down 3-1 at the start of the inning, the Blue Devils scored seven runs — all after there were two outs — en route an 8-5 win. They fell to Nebraska Wesleyan earlier in the day.

A lead-off double by Dennis preceded a two-out RBI single by Lauren Pixley. Consecutive walks loaded the bases before Nance grounded to deep short. Cooley beat the throw to second and the tying run scored. Nikki Lent then laced a single to short left and when the ball eluded the left-fielder, three more runs scored. Cassie Herman singled to score Lent and Dennis’ second double in the inning scored Herman.

Yudin ran into control trouble in the top of the seventh, the only blip on an otherwise solid effort. She improved to 2-1 while Seegar got the final out with a strikeout to earn her first collegiate save.

Cooley, a freshman, had a triple and a double.

The Blue Devils dropped Thursday’s opener, the first game of their Florida trip, 8-2 to Nebraska Wesleyan. Up 1-0 in the first inning on a hit batter, a single by Herman, and an RBI fielder’s choice by Dennis, the Blue Devils saw Nebraska Wesleyan come up with two runs in the first and four more off losing pitcher Shellenberger. The four runs in the second were unearned.

Herman led the offense with two singles while Pixley had an RBI single.

The Blue Devils are off today and return to action Sunday against Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute at 3:30 p.m. and Framingham State at 6 p.m. Both games are at Hancock Park.
