Can you dig it?: Forestville, CV, Fredonia grab league openers

The Forestville Lady Hornets (2-0, 1-0) girls volleyball squad opened CCAA North league play Tuesday with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 victory in Dunkirk (0-1, 0-1).

Brooke Ostrye slammed home 13 kills and also blasted three aces for the visitors. Alison Mierzwa had nine aces and two kills, while Rhianna Nasal made 55 assists and added two kills.

The Lady Marauders were led by Aaliyah Bass, who managed five blocks and five kills, and Alexis Tofil, who contributed two aces and two kills.

“They fought hard and never gave up — I’m still proud of my girls,” Lady Marauders coach Jamie Thompson said of her team. “We have a very talented team and a long season to go.”

Dunkirk returns to CCAA North action Thursday in Fredonia, while Foresvtille also has a divisional game that afternoon, hosting Brocton.

SINCLAIRVILLE — The Cassadaga Valley Lady Cougars defeated Brocton-Westfield in the opening CCAA North girls volleyball match for both teams, 25-15, 25-15, 25-6.

The Lady Cougars (2-1, 1-0) received eight kills, a block and an ace from Jenna Caskey, while Savannah Nickerson pitched in 17 assists and five aces. Maranda Perez made four kills for the home team, while Katrinah Bretel came through with three aces and two kills.

Gypsi Eidens led Brocton-Westfield (0-2, 0-1) with four kills, two blocks and a dig. Elyse Markham had four aces and two assists for the visitors.

Cassadaga Valley also won the JV game.

Both teams return to action Thursday. Brocton-Westfield plays at Forestville while Cassadaga Valley is set to host North Collins.

SILVER CREEK — The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies held off the Silver Creek Black Knights in a five-set thriller Thuesday. The CCAA North opener for both teams ended in a score of 25-22, 11-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-16.

Mackenzie Markham served up eight aces and made three kills for the visiting Lady Hillbillies. Gracie Morrison and Lianna DiRusso each had four kills and two blocks for the team. Fredonia’s Katie Price contributed 15 digs and three kills.

The Black Knights were led by Krystal Schwab’s nine kills and five aces. Julia Hill made 16 assists and fired eight aces for Silver Creek, while Libby Lawton made seven digs and four kills and Lauren Grover turned in six digs.

Both teams return to action Thursday. Silver Creek travels to Gowanda and Fredonia hosts Dunkirk.
