CL, Fredonia grab tennis wins

The Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds won at Dunkirk, 3-2, Wednesday in high school girls tennis.

Chautauqua Lake swept the singles matches. In first singles, Chautauqua Lake’s Autumn Shuskie defeated Isabella Surma of Dunkirk, 6-4, 6-2.

In second singles, Corinne Elliot, of Chautauqua Lake, beat the Lady Marauders’ Hannah Saye, 7-6, 6-4.

Emily Bauer of Chautauqua Lake topped Dunkirk’s Gabi Loeb, 6-4, 6-4, in third singles.

Dunkirk’s doubles teams of Maddie Gokey-Hannah Osar and Zoe Loeb- Hannah Sanchez were both victorious.

The Lady Marauders return to action Friday at Fredonia. Chautauqua Lake is also back on the courts Friday, scheduled to host Maple Grove.

FREDONIA 3, SOUTHWESTERN 2

LAKEWOOD — Fredonia’s girls tennis team defeated Southwestern, 3-2, Wednesday in the first tennis match of the season for both schools.

The Lady Hillbillies’ Kelsey Vianese defeated the Lady Trojans’ Olivia Persia by a 6-4, 6-1 score. Fredonia’s Alicia Kluck won her singles match over Southwestern’s Hiba Munir, 6-2, 6-1.

In first doubles, Fredonia’s Jill Valvo and Selin Arnavut topped Southwestern’s Elizabeth Kane and Isabella Grijalva, 6-1, 6-4.

Mikayla Johnson won a match for the Lady Trojans, overcoming Bernadette Gens by a 6-1, 6-0 count. Southwestern’s Mikayla Dale and Isabella Meyers recorded a 7-6, 6-2 victory in second doubles over Fredonia’s Lydia Bird and Katie Panasci.

“This was a great win for our first match and it has been eight years since Fredonia’s girls team defeated Southwestern,” Lady Hillbillies coach Lisa Johnston said. “Southwestern has only had two losses in approximately 75 matches.”

Fredonia is back in action today at home against Olean.
