Devils tennis squad wins

The Fredonia women’s tennis team defeated Penn State Behrend for the first time in four years, by winning 8-1. However, the matches were much closer than the team score indicated — first, second and third singles all went to tiebreakers, with the Devils claiming all three.

The Devils’ Anna Chiacchia defeated Marissa Bowles; 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Fredonia’s Olivia Miller topped Kelly Miller, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. Sarah Bunk improved her singles record to 3-0, taking down Celeste Bentley; 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.

Fredonia cruised in the final three singles, as Chloe Karnisky, Adriana Speach and Avril King all won in straight sets. Karnisky and King did not drop a single game, both winning 6-0.

The only loss on the day came at No. 1 doubles. Behrend’s Miller and Bentley downed Chaicchia and Miller, 8-3.

Bunk and Speach won 8-6, while No. 3 doubles went to the duo of Karnisky and Mallory Mecca (Eden), 8-0.

Fredonia improves to 2-1, while the visiting Lions sport an identical record. Fredonia is on the road at Geneseo today.
